PROSTHODONTICS

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and /or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. It includes the specialty of implants, aesthetic and reconstructive dentistry. Restoration of oral function is done through prostheses and restoration, (i.e. Complete denture, Crowns, Implant Retained/Supported Restorations). The Department of Prosthodontics is designed to increase the knowledge base, clinical and laboratory skills of the students in all areas of Prosthodontics. The primary objective of the program is to prepare accomplished dentists to diagnose and treat patients in need of rehabilitation.

The undergraduates attend the Prosthodontics department during all four years of their graduate training. They are introduced to the need and advancements of Prosthodontics in today’s era. The graduates are trained in: -

  • Principles, concepts and techniques in Pre-Clinical Prosthodontics.
  • Clinical aspects of basic Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics
  • Trained to hone skills in handling dental materials and Prosthodontic instruments.
  • They are introduced to the basics of Prosthodontics and the array of treatments in the program.
  • Typhodont exercises on phantom heads to develop skills in Fixed Prosthodontics.
  • During Internship students are trained to comprehensively treat patients individually in all aspects of Prosthodontic treatments including Dental Implants.

Our Postgraduate (MDS) program offers 6 seats, with an aim to impart quality specialized training to the individual student. The department gives equal emphasis to innovative teaching methodologies and research along with patient care. The various treatment modalities are:

  • FIXED and REMOVABLE PROSTHODONTICS.
  • ESTHETIC DENTISTRY including SMILE DESIGNING and CERAMIC/ COMPOSITE VENEERS.
  • SINGLE and FULL MOUTH IMPLANT PROSTHODONTICS including CBCT GUIDED SURGERY.
  • MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETICS.
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION (TMD).
  • Prosthodontic management of OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

The Department of Prosthodontics has its own fully equipped IMPLANT SURGICAL OPERATION THEATRE, with the option of training and placing the latest DENTAL IMPLANT SYSTEMS (BREDENT, ANKYLOS, XIVE, ADIN, GENESIS).
The Department is well equipped in the best class facilities viz. WIRELESS RVG, PORTABLE X-RAY, FULLY AUTOMATIC DENTAL CHAIRS, HIGH SPEED MOTORIZED SUCTION.

The Department also has a: -

  • DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY which is adequately stocked with latest textbooks, journals and internet facility.
  • A separate UNDERGRADUATE and POSTGRADUATE ACRYLIC LAB
  • 3 Labs for PRE-CLINICAL PROSTHODONTIC WORK including a PHANTOM HEAD LAB, CERAMIC LAB, METAL and an ACRYLIC LAB.
  • Induction casting, ceramic furnaces flexible denture system, composite curing unit, vacupress etc. as per DCI norms.
  • Dedicated IMPLANT OT with latest implant systems and equipments.

More than 300 IMPLANTS are placed every year by Post Graduates. The Department utilizes CAD CAM TECHNOLOGY for GUIDED IMPLANT SURGERIES and PROSTHETIC REHABILITATION. The post graduates are trained from basic to HIGHLY ADVANCE DENTAL IMPLANTOLOGY PROCEDURES.

The Department has recently been extremely active in providing MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHESIS for extremely TYPICAL and SPECIALIZED CASES such as HOLLOW BULB OBTURATOR, SURGICAL OBTURATOR for CARCINOMA MAXILLA, VELOPHARYNGEAL PROSTHESIS. The Department widened their horizons of Clinical Efficiency by starting to provide numerous OCULAR and THUMB PROSTHESIS in the recent past.

The program provides comprehensive, patient-centred and evidence-based care, which engages the Residents in research, scholarly activities and community service. The residents gain experience by:

  • Attending NATIONAL AND STATE CONFERENCES and CONVENTIONS, along with CONTINUING DENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS.
  • Completing an ORIGINAL RESEARCH PROJECT after obtaining ethical clearance and presenting to the faculty and thereafter publishing it in the best national/international journals.
  • The Department is actively encouraging post graduates in publishing books and has Published 3 Books - Titled BOTOX AND ITS PROSTHODONTIC IMPLICATIONS and DRUG INTERACTION IN PROSTHODONTICS and Ozone and its Application in Dentistry.
  • International Design Patent Granted (Federal Republic of Germany) for “A Medical Ozone Handpiece for Dental Applications” (Patent No. DE202022101925U1).

Every year six new research projects are conducted in the Department. The Faculty members are updated with the latest in their field and frequently present and publish several papers. They regularly conduct many Pre -Conference Courses in National and International conferences and continually strive to train and deliver knowledgeable, extremely competent and compassionate practitioners.

The department is also active in conducting free denture camps every week for the poor patients from rural areas. The institute has adopted nearby schools, old age homes as well as model jail, Lucknow, for free dental camps especially for the Geriatric Population.
