HIGHLIGHTS

Oral Pathology is the only specialty that bridges the gap between the dental and the medical fraternity. The Department of Oral Pathology at Sardar Patel Institute of Dental Sciences began with the inception of the institute. This Department took its first step and since then has made tremendous progress ACADEMICALLY AND INFRASTRUCTURE WISE and has made its mark.

The post-graduate course in the Department of Oral Pathology was started in the year 2003 and a total of 40 plus post-graduates have passed from the department till date. Primarily, it is a research-oriented department that imparts quality training to undergraduates and postgraduates. Besides conducting all ROUTINE BLOOD ANALYSIS and HISTOPATHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION, the department is actively involved in various research projects on ORAL-PRECANCER and CANCER using the latest MOLECULAR TESTING METHODS. With the approval from the NABL (NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BOARD FOR TESTING AND CALIBRATION LABORATORIES) the equipment for the haematological analysis is going to be procured by the Department at the earliest. The high level of training given to postgraduates by the experienced staff has resulted in numerous accolades being won by them at various national specialty conferences.

The advanced facilities available include a modern Department histopathology laboratory equipped with an ARRAY OF LATEST DIAGNOSTIC MICROSCOPES and equipment, MICROBIOLOGY SECTION, SPACIOUS UNDERGRADUATE LABORATORY, PATHOLOGY MUSEUM, SEPARATE POSTGRADUATE LABORATORY, and a seminar hall. Highly sophisticated AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS, SLIDE TRANSPARENCIES on various topics and RESEARCH MICROSCOPES amplify the quality of training imparted. A remarkable collection of over 3000 QUALITY HISTOPATHOLOGY SLIDES, NUMEROUS SPECIMENS as well as AN ARRAY OF JOURNALS & TEXTBOOKS help the students unearth the nuances of oral pathology and microbiology.

The faculty of this department is working in collaboration with NOCR (NATIONAL ORAL CANCER REGISTRY) which keeps the record of each new cancer case reported within the NORTH REGION. The Department has been reporting a decent number of cases both Biopsy & Cytology and Rarer Cases.

During the 3-year program the post graduate students gets posted in the DERMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT of the Institutes General Hospital where they get a better understanding of various skin lesions and Lesions manifesting both in the Oral Cavity and on the Skin, which provide an additional dimension to their Pathological Acumen. Furthermore, the post graduate is posted at the LUCKNOW CANCER INSTITUTE and at SANJAY GANDHI POST GRADUATE INSTITUTE for Advanced Training in IMMUNOLOGY and MICROBIOLOGY.

The Department possesses an OLYMPUS PENTA HEAD MULTI-VIEWING MICROSCOPE, LEICA RESEARCH MICROSCOPE with POLARIZING, PHASE CONTRAST, DARKFIELD & FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY with DIGITAL CAMERA and COMPUTER. An OLYMPUS RESEARCH MICROSCOPE with CCTV attachment. The Latest LIECA QWIN IMAGE ANALYSIS SOFTWARE, a VISUALIZER: for live demonstrations, LIECA SEMI-AUTOMATIC MICROTOME, EZRETRIVER (IHC) ANTIGEN RETRIVAL OVEN.
