The thirty-six-month accredited advanced education program in Orthodontics offers a concurrent Masters in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics degree. Following successful completion of the program, individuals are educationally qualified to become diplomats of the Indian Board of Orthodontics. The primary objective of the program is to prepare accomplished dentists to practice in the clinical specialty of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics.
The program has developed clearly stated goals and objectives appropriate to advanced specialty education, addressing education, patient care, research and service.
The program emphasizes on: -
- a unified concept of growth and development
- Clinical biomechanics
- Applied basic sciences
- Diagnosis and treatment planning
- Patient care, Ethical behaviors and sound Practice Management.
The first-year students are introduced to: -
- Basic contemporary and classic orthodontic techniques, principles and concepts early in the program.
- Orthodontic instruments, equipment, and properties of materials are covered with emphasis on wire manipulation.
- A significant element of Pre-Clinical training is Pre-Clinical Typhodont exercise both in Edgewise and Pre-Adjusted Edgewise mechanics along with fabrication and manipulation of Functional and Orthopedic appliances to achieve Growth modification.
- In addition to these fundamentals, topics such as diagnosis, appliance properties and treatment planning are covered in didactic and clinical seminar sessions.
Clinical activity is described as multi-disciplinary where exposure to various orthodontic techniques is provided. Post Graduates are trained and allowed to practice different systems:-
- Pre-Adjusted appliance (MBT AND ROTH PRESCRIPTION), TIP-EDGE
- ESTHETIC BRACKETS (Ceramic and Ceramic Self-Ligation system)
- SELF-LIGATION SYSTEM (Smart Clip / Damon system).
- LINGUAL ORTHODONTICS (ORMCO STB, I-LINGUAL, LINGUOMATRIX and 3M INCOGNITO)
- ALIGNER MECHANOTHERAPY (Array of available Aligners including INVISALIGN)
- TAD (MINI-IMPLANTS) and ACCELERATED ORTHODONTICS.
- Diagnosis and treatment planning sessions, together with case progress discussions are held weekly and a journal club assists the candidates with guided journal reading.
A combined clinic where not only Orthognathic cases, but also Inter-Department cases with Pedodontics, Periodontics, Conservative and Prosthodontics are discussed and joint discussions and treatment are regularly held.
The clinical and practice management components of the program partially rely on extramural experiences the residents gain by:-
- Attending National and State Conferences and Conventions, along with Continuing Dental Education programs.
- Conducting an original research project, present it to faculty, ethical committee and peers, use a thesis format for completing the paper, and finally, edit the paper in publishable format.
The program promotes patient health and the education of diverse, ethical, and professional specialists. It provides comprehensive, patient-centered, evidence-based and outcome-driven care, where residents engage in research, scholarly activities and community service. The program’s well balanced and cutting-edge curriculum integrate a strong foundation of clinical and didactic fundamentals on which residents can build a critical, in-depth and scholarly knowledge base. Through high-quality multi-disciplinary and inter-professional experiences, the program encourages residents to maintain a life-long learning and a passion to provide service to the community and organized orthodontics.
